You’re doing your best. Eating well (most of the time). Trying to move, sleep, manage stress, and show up for everyone in your life.
But despite all the effort, you still wake up tired. You crash in the afternoon. You rely on caffeine to get through the day. And even though your bloods came back “fine,” something just isn’t right.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Fatigue is one of the most common complaints I see in clinic, especially among women who are holding everything together but feel like they’re running on empty.
Here’s what I want you to know:
You’re not lazy, broken, or imagining it. You just need better data and smarter support.
The Hidden Drivers of Fatigue (That Often Get Missed)
Fatigue is rarely about “just getting more sleep” or “reducing stress.” It’s often a combination of physiological imbalances that get overlooked in standard healthcare settings.
In my clinical experience, these are the five most common root causes behind that wired-but-tired feeling:
1. Nutrient Depletions
Even with a healthy diet, many women are low in key nutrients like:
- Iron (and ferritin)
- B12 and folate
- Magnesium
- B vitamins
These are essential for energy production, nervous system regulation, and hormone balance. If they’re depleted, you’ll feel it.
2. Adrenal Dysfunction (HPA Axis Dysregulation)
This isn’t “adrenal fatigue” but your brain and adrenal glands do lose rhythm under long-term stress.
Early signs I often see include:
- Afternoon crashes
- Trouble falling asleep (but exhausted)
- Feeling wired after caffeine
- Feeling worse after high-intensity exercise
This kind of dysregulation doesn’t usually show up in basic blood tests but it shows up in how you feel.
3. Blood Sugar Imbalance
You don’t need to be diabetic to have unstable blood sugar. In fact, I often see clients struggling with:
- Energy dips after meals
- Waking up between 2–4am
- Cravings for sugar or caffeine in the afternoon
Balancing blood sugar is key for consistent energy and it starts with the first meal of the day.
4. Low-Grade Inflammation
Inflammation quietly affects your mitochondria (where your energy is made). It also messes with your gut health, your hormones, and your ability to recover from stress.
Chronic bloat, skin flare-ups, joint pain, or brain fog? They’re often linked.
5. Gut Health Issues
Poor digestion means poor absorption which means you might not be getting the benefits of the food you’re eating.
Signs your gut could be draining your energy:
- Bloating, especially after meals
- Irregular bowel movements
- Persistent skin issues
- Fatigue that flares after eating
This Isn’t About Doing More, It’s About Doing What Works
