Feeling low, foggy, or unmotivated? Your gut might be behind it.

In functional medicine, we always look beyond surface symptoms. If someone comes to me saying they feel flat, anxious, forgetful, or chronically unmotivated, I don’t just look at their mindset or mental health history. I look at their gut. Here’s why:

Your gut and brain are deeply connected.

This connection is called the gut-brain axis. It’s a two-way communication system between your digestive tract and your central nervous system. What happens in your gut affects your brain and vice versa.

Over 90% of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates mood, is produced in your gut. So is a significant portion of dopamine, which affects drive, focus, and motivation.

If your gut is inflamed, imbalanced, or under stress, your brain feels it. Symptoms might show up as:

  • Low mood or anxiety
  • Brain fog
  • Trouble focusing or retaining information
  • Irritability or overwhelm
  • Loss of motivation or drive

What disrupts gut function?

Even if you’re eating well, many hidden factors can affect gut health:

  • Chronic stress
  • Food sensitivities (especially gluten, dairy, seed oils)
  • Gut infections or imbalances (like candida or dysbiosis)
  • Low stomach acid or enzyme production
  • Blood sugar instability
  • Frequent antibiotic or medication use

These stressors can impair digestion, alter your microbiome, and increase inflammation, leading to the very symptoms you’re trying to fix with willpower or supplements.

Why your gut may be the missing link

Many people are told they’re “fine” based on surface-level tests, yet they’re still living with brain fog, anxiety, and fatigue. That’s where functional testing comes in – looking deeper at gut health, microbiome balance, and inflammation markers to uncover what’s really driving those symptoms.

In The Bexology Method, I help you identify the gut-brain patterns that might be holding you back, and offer real solutions to restore balance.

What to do next

If you’re feeling flat, foggy, or just “not like yourself,” it’s time to stop guessing. Your gut may be the missing piece.
